FROM TRADE TO PROFESSION - A PROFESSIONAL FUTURE FOR PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
The Association for Passive Fire Protection's (ASFP) new initiative aims to change the perception of the passive fire sector within design, specification, procurement, construction, installation, and post-occupation by way of a series of mechanisms to professionalise the sector.
What does 'professionalise' mean? Passive fire has generally been seen as a trade, an afterthought to be dealt with later, if at all. You wouldn't consider an architect or engineer not to be part of a profession, so then why isn't the very important, niche specialism of passive fire protection thought of as the same?
In collaboration with Intersec, the ASFP will provide thought leadership on how all aspects of passive fire products and services will evolve into a profession. This includes improvements in passive fire design through the publication of new best practice guidance, enhancing product safety via new performance identification systems, and creating a formal competency framework and register.
In support of this initiative, senior members of the ASFP team and those who work collaboratively with the association will be delivering a series of presentations and panel sessions on some of the following topics:
- Designing in passive fire protection for principal designers, engineers and contractors.
- The benefit of 'Early Engagement' with passive fire manufacturers and specialist installers and fire stoppers.
- Case studies on the evolving relationship between construction product regulations and building regulations.
- Unravelling the challenges of best practice in design, specification and installation of fire doors.
- The evolving landscape of competency within the passive fire sector.
- Building an understanding of the critical role of passive fire protection and why its importance should not be underestimated or overlooked.
