Innovatrics’ chief says Middle East is key growth area for new facial recognition tech

Intersec Editor Gary Wright speaks to Peter Martis, Innovatrics Chief Sales Officer on the eve of this year’s show in Dubai and discovers how its Smartface offers a new layer of security in the post-pandemic age of face masks for everyone

Innovatrics

Gary Wright : Could you tell our readers what they can expect from Innovatrics at Intersec 2022?

Peter Martis: We will be showcasing our SmartFace 5 platform that has been developed specifically with preemptive public security in mind.  Our demo will show how the SmartFace platform can process several different video streams from most types of cameras (on-body, smart glasses, CCTV...) and search history of face detection for specific faces.

Gary Wright : Tell our readers about your company’s focus and products for the show.

Peter Martis: Innovatrics is a provider of biometric solutions with its own R&D that focuses on having the fastest, most accurate fingerprint and facial recognition algorithms. Our product at the show, SmartFace, is a platform that combines face detection and recognition into a package that can be used for different purposes. Security is the obvious focus for Intersec and we want to show how we can enhance VMS systems with real-time face search functionalities, large watchlists and blocklists and other security-focused features.

Gary Wright : What do you see as the key security issues for customers during 2022?

Peter Martis: The main key is the ability to automate most functions, so that the security personnel is alerted and can focus only on security incidents. Our system is analyzing any number of video streams in real-time, giving personnel the possibility to focus only on the really important events. Moreover, with the ability to search the history of detected faces without reprocessing entire video stream shortens the timespan for investigating incidents.

Gary Wright : What effect has the pandemic had on your business and your customers?

Peter Martis: The pandemic really amped up the demand for touchless, seamless facial recognition solutions that would work without the need for physical contact and even with face masks on. Our algorithms have worked reliably even with face masks, but we upgraded them since the start of the pandemic. The demand has really surged especially among customers that do have a security system in place (stadiums, airports etc.) and want to upgrade them with smart, touchless, seamless features.

Gary Wright: Could you tell our readers why Intersec 2022 is important to Innovatrics

Peter Martis: We want to show that complex facial recognition systems can still be easy to use and don't force you to adopt specific hardware or software platforms. Moreover, the current development in edge computing allows to reap the benefits in the form of lower hardware requirements and bandwidth demand. With the flexibility of SmartFace, our clients can see that they can expand their systems without worries about camera or bandwidth limits.

Gary Wright:   Why is the Middle East a key area for your business?

Peter Martis: The Middle East has a lot of experienced professionals in security that understand the need for highly automated, fast and flexible security platform. Middle East is also a hub for testing new pioneering technologies and putting them to good use. The feedback from the professionals then allows us to introduce new features that are made specifically for them, as we have shown in the biometric border control systems we have installed in the region.

Gary Wright:  Where do you expect the key growth areas in this sector?

Peter Martis: Key growth areas in our point of view are definitely in the field of facial-recognition based touchless systems, especially when they provide automation options and are easy to scale.

Gary Wright:  Is there anything else you believe our readers should know about Innovatrics?

Peter Martis: The company was founded in 2004 and develops its own top-performing fingerprint and facial recognition algorithms (according to industry-standard tests by NIST). Our solutions are now found in over 80 countries and range from border control and electronic voter registries to remote smartphone onboarding solutions for banks.
